Is DVDStyler Safe?
Short answer: yes — the current official version of DVDStyler is safe to use, provided you download the genuine file from the official channel and verify it. DVDStyler is a long-running free, open-source DVD authoring program (GPLv2) by Alex Thüring, distributed through SourceForge. Like a lot of older open-source software, it has one episode in its past that deserves to be told straight — the 2.8 era, covered below — but no such reports attach to later versions, and you do not have to take anyone’s word for any of this: the checksums on this page let you verify your own download against the values published on SourceForge.
The honest history: the 2.8.0 / 2.8.1 adware episode
Trust starts with not hiding this. As recorded on Wikipedia, the Windows installers for DVDStyler versions 2.8.0 and 2.8.1 bundled adware, and the option to decline it was not presented clearly during installation. That is a legitimate blot on the project’s record, and it is the main reason “is DVDStyler safe” gets asked at all. Those versions are from a decade ago. No equivalent bundling reports attach to subsequent releases, including the current stable 3.2.1 (released November 2, 2021) and the 3.3b4 beta (August 6, 2024) — but the right lesson from the episode is not “trust blindly”, it is “download from the official source and check the file”, which is exactly what the next section shows you how to do.
How to verify your download yourself
Every file on this site’s download page links to the official DVDStyler files hosted on SourceForge. A checksum is a fingerprint of a file: if your downloaded file’s fingerprint matches the official value character for character, you have exactly the file the project published — nothing added, nothing removed. Compare at least one of these:
| File | Checksum (as published on SourceForge) |
|---|---|
DVDStyler 3.2.1, Windows 64-bitDVDStyler-3.2.1-win64.exe | MD527d5327d52afdc7ca3b8875c3f3bbced |
DVDStyler 3.3b4 (Beta), Windows 64-bitDVDStyler-3.3b4-win64.exe | SHA-256d3249b29e3347a47f1fe313a648bfdc818060ed28fd00452047c96db18eac8d0 |
On Windows you can check a file with the built-in command certutil -hashfile <filename> MD5 (or SHA256) in a terminal. If the value does not match, delete the file and download it again from the official channel — do not install a file you cannot verify. SourceForge also runs its own malware scanning on project files: its scanner (vscan) marked the 3.3b4 Windows 64-bit file as OK on February 19, 2025.
What other users report
On SourceForge, where the project is officially hosted, DVDStyler holds a rating of 4.0 out of 5 across 167 user ratings. That is a solid but not flawless score for a free tool that has been maintained since 2003 — consistent with what the program is: capable and genuinely free, with an older-style interface. We quote only this verifiable figure; any other star rating for DVDStyler you see on download sites (including inflated ones this site previously displayed and has removed) should be treated with suspicion.
Safe download checklist
- Download only from the official channel: the files linked from our download page and Windows download page resolve to
downloads.sourceforge.net, the project’s official file host. - Verify the checksum using the table above before installing.
- There is no paid “Pro” version. DVDStyler is free and open source under GPLv2. Any site selling a “DVDStyler Pro”, “Premium” or a cracked/activated edition is not selling a real product — walk away.
- Be wary of lookalike download buttons on third-party download portals; the real file names are the ones listed in the table and on our download page.
- A Windows SmartScreen prompt is not a verdict. Windows shows it for many less-commonly-downloaded open-source installers. The checksum match is your real evidence — if it matches, proceed with confidence; if it does not, stop.
