How to Put Multiple Videos on One DVD with DVDStyler

One disc, several videos: the holiday clips as separate episodes, three short films, or a season of home recordings. DVDStyler handles this naturally — each file you add becomes its own title on the disc — and it goes further than most free tools by supporting titlesets, which let files in different formats share one disc. This tutorial explains how titles and titlesets work, how to estimate whether everything will fit, and how to organize the menu so viewers can find each video. The basic workflow is the one from burn an MP4 to DVD; this page focuses on the multi-video specifics.

How multiple titles work

Add files by dragging them into the project or using the file browser. Each file becomes a title with its own button on the menu. Playback behavior is yours to set: after a title finishes, the player can return to the menu (the safest default for mixed content) or continue to the next title. Open each title’s properties to set what happens when it ends.

Titlesets: why different formats can share a disc

DVD-Video has a strict rule: within one titleset (a group of titles managed together), the video characteristics — resolution, TV standard, aspect ratio, audio format — must be consistent, because the player treats the set as one continuous structure. Real collections break that rule constantly: a PAL clip from a European camera, an NTSC clip from an American one, a 4:3 recording next to a 16:9 one.

DVDStyler’s answer is titleset support. When you add a file whose properties differ from the titles already present, DVDStyler can place it in a new titleset of its own, converting where needed, so the disc as a whole stays legal for players. In practice you do not manage titlesets by hand most of the time — you add your files, DVDStyler groups them, and the menu links across groups transparently. The concept matters when something refuses to sit together: if a file must be normalized, converting it to match the others (same standard, same aspect ratio) before importing makes the project simpler, and NTSC vs PAL explains the standards themselves.

Estimate capacity before you author

A DVD-5 blank holds 4.7 GB, a DVD-9 holds 8.5 GB. DVDStyler shows the estimated disc usage as you add titles and adjusts encoding bitrate to fit the project’s target size — more material on the same disc means a lower bitrate per minute and a visibly softer picture. Rough guidance:

  • Up to about 2 hours total on DVD-5: quality stays close to the sources for typical home video.
  • 2–3 hours: acceptable for talking-head and family footage; fast motion and confetti-type detail start to smear.
  • Beyond that: split across two discs, or move the project to DVD-9 if your burner and blanks support dual layer.

Decide the split before you design the menu, not after — restructuring a finished menu around a removed title wastes the fiddliest part of the work.

Organize the menu

With several titles, the menu does real organizational work:

  • Give every title a short, honest label. “Episode 1 — Arrival” beats a filename.
  • For more than about six titles, split the menu: a main menu with category buttons (“2023”, “2024”, “Extras”) opening sub-menus. Copy your main menu’s design for the sub-menus so the disc feels like one product (see create a DVD menu).
  • Add a “Play all” button if the content is a series: set the titles to chain playback in order, and let the Play all button start the first one.
  • Add chapters within long titles so the menu does not have to do everything — the chapters tutorial covers that.

Preview, generate, verify

Test every button in preview, not just the first — with multiple titles, a mis-targeted button is easy to miss. Generate an ISO (generate and burn an ISO image), spot-check the start of each title in a software player, then burn. If generation fails with many titles where it succeeded with one, the usual suspect is one bad source file: remove titles one at a time to find it, and check DVD generation errors for the full checklist.
